EU AI Act · Article 50 · Live since 2 Aug 2026
Is your AI chatbot EU-legal?
The 60-second Article 50 self-check — for US SaaS & AI founders whose chatbots, assistants, or AI features reach users in the EU. No sign-up, no email.
Built by a compliance specialist with a background in law (four years in-house) who also reads the code — so this checks what a regulator and your codebase actually show, not a generic template.
// why this matters now
The EU AI Act's transparency rules (Article 50) have applied since 2 August 2026 — they are live right now. A transition applies to marking generated content: systems already on the market before that date must comply with Article 50(2) by 2 December 2026. If people in the EU use your product, the rules reach your US company today. Non-compliance falls under the AI Act's fine regime — up to €15,000,000 or 3% of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher (Article 99(4)); for SMEs, start-ups and small mid-caps, the lower of the two applies — but "lower" is still a number that ends a runway. (The €35M / 7% ceiling you may have seen applies to prohibited AI practices under Article 5, not to Article 50 transparency.)
How to read it: Questions 1, 2, 7 and 8 apply to every AI chatbot. Questions 3–6 apply only if you generate content, infer emotions/biometrics, or produce deepfakes — if that's not you, answer "Yes" and they won't count against you. A single "No" or "Not sure" on the core four means you are at least partly exposed.
Nature of this document. This is a compliance instrument (a self-assessment) to support your EU AI Act / GDPR readiness. Items marked UNCERTAIN require expert confirmation.
// the 8 questions
Answer Yes / No / Not sure. It takes about a minute.
// tip: "not sure" counts the same as "no" — because if you're not sure, a regulator isn't either.
